What is Celebrity Fantasy Draft?
A fantasy game for those who enjoy E! more than ESPN. Instead of drafting athletes and getting points based on their performance, you draft celebrities and get points based on where those celebrities appear in the pages of Us Weekly, InTouch and/or People magazines. The cover is worth the most, but every point counts. To see the point values for each magazine, see “Rules”
How do I play?
All you need to do is create a league, invite your friends to compete, and draft your favorite Celebs.
Then, sit back and watch as your draft picks' popularity (or lack thereof) unfolds each week in the pages of People, InTouch, and US Magazine. Your league can choose which magazine(s) to play, or play all three.
For more detail, see “How to Play with Pop Culture in 10 Easy Steps”
Can I join a league that has already been formed?
Speaking from experience, the draft (including the gossip, smack talk, and beverages) is one of the best parts of the game. So, for now, if you want to play, you will have to set up a league and invite your friends, or hope that one of them organizes a league for you to play. It’s better than forming a book club – and most people enjoy the reading more, too!
What does it cost?
Only $20 per season per league. Each league can have up to 20 players (the director plus 19 invited players). If you have the full 20 person league, that is only $1 per person for two month season.
What do I get for winning?
Aside from bragging rights, that is up to your individual league. We are not a gambling site, and do not take wagers of any kind or distribute prizes. We just provide the statistics, collect the data, and keep a running tally of your league's totals.
When does the season start . . . and end?
Seasons run in two month intervals ending on the issue dated the last Monday in the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. Because the publication date is about two weeks ahead of the actual calendar date, you will get your season results the second to last Monday of the month. This means the best time to draft is the Monday or Tuesday in the second to last week of the month (or before). You can start your season at any time, but score totaling will end on these dates for each season. Leagues can run multiple seasons with the same players, or redraft for each season.
How do I know where I rank?
Every Monday we will send you a link to check your scores and the standings in your league. Simply log on to check your stats – and let the taunting begin.
What if I want to choose a Celebrity that is not in the database?
For now, everyone in the league needs to select celebrities from those in the database at the time of the draft – we think you will find that the list is pretty comprehensive. New Celebrities are added after they have appeared 2 to 3 times in the magazines. If you want someone added, you can send us an e-mail through the “Contact Us” link on the bottom of the site. If you contact us before the season starts, we will attempt to add your selection prior to the beginning of the next season.
Can I pick new Celebrities if mine are sucking wind?
There is no “free agency” because the seasons are so short. You do get to draft 2 understudies and you can switch them in and out throughout the season.
How do you break a tie?
In case of a tie, the winner is based on the tied players’ total points for the season including the players’ alternates’ points.
How does the Draft Work?
The league director should bring the draft kit, which includes all celebrities in the database (either electronic in spreadsheet format or PDF that can be printed). The director will keep track of everyone's picks, and input them after the draft is complete. The Director can also log players into the site during the draft if they have a computer with them and an internet connection. Once that is done, and payment is made, assuming someone in the league has already played the free trial, the season begins.
What if I can’t make the Draft?
Your best bet is to send a proxy. You can rank your players in advance, and send your rankings with a friend in your league, be picked in your order when it is your turn. Make sure to rank enough players so that if your picks are taken by the time it is your turn, you will have a fallback. Some people picking by proxy simply ask that their selections be the next available player based on total points, either last season or by the 52-week totals.
Can My League Draft Online Instead of Have a Live Draft?
YES, now you can! We have rolled out an online draft to allow you and your friends in other locations to play together! Go to Rules and Scoring for complete details on how to conduct an Online Draft.
I saw a celebrity on the Inset Cover at the Supermarket, and didn’t get 5 points– Why?
Scores are based on the subscription issue of the magazine (the one mailed to subscribers), unless for some reasons the scorers did not get their subscription in the mail in time to score in which case they will buy a newsstand version. Often, there are different covers (and sometimes internal content) in the newsstand version versus the subscription version.
